Volunteer Information

Scheduling Volunteers

We need to match the number of volunteers with the work that needs to be done on each day and balance the numbers of volunteers with the availability of experienced supervisors that know what needs to be done and can be sure the work meets our standards. To finish our project within the timeline we need to have commitments that we can count on. It is our expectation that if you commit to help on a specific day that you do all you can to meet that commitment. We understand that last minute emergencies can come up but we hope you can keep those to minimum. We would prefer you to commit to an entire work day (9:00 am to 4 pm) if you can. If not, we ask for at least a 4 hour commitment to effectively use everyone’s time.

Safety Considerations

We want everyone helping on this project to go home at the end of the day both healthy and happy so there will be a strong emphasis on safety at the job site. National standards for Habitat prohibit anyone under 16 years of age being on the job site so other arrangements will have to be made if you have children to take care of. All volunteers will be required to view a safety video online before they show up for their work day. It is the volunteer’s responsibility to show up appropriately dressed for the job they will likely be doing. Sturdy shoes or boots are required – sandals are not appropriate for a construction site. Safety glasses to protect your eyes are required so bring them if you have them. We may provide hardhats on some days. Other personal protective equipment such as gloves and earplugs are strongly recommended. Sunscreen to protect you from the sun and extra clothes in case the weather changes are also essential. We will have a safety briefing to start each morning. Constant awareness of your surroundings and good communication with other volunteers will be essential to keep everyone safe. If the supervisor feels you aren’t capable of working safely you’ll be asked to leave the site.

Matching Skills and Desires to the Work

As much as possible we hope to match volunteers with jobs they have an interest in or some experience with. We don’t expect everyone to be a professional builder but if you have skills or experience in some of our jobs we want to be sure to take advantage of your knowledge. If you have physical limitations please let us know so we can match you to an appropriate task. If you aren’t ready to swing a hammer we also need volunteers to fix and serve lunch to other volunteers, sign volunteers in and out or help keep the worksite clean. Let us know what you want to do and we will do our best to match you to the best job for you. At the same time it is important to remain flexible. We will try to stick to our construction schedule as much as possible but we may work faster or slower than anticipated and on your work day the jobs may be a bit different than first anticipated.
