Steve Schechter, our local Lorax, was the ultimate advocate for the Earth. 

He was known for doing the right thing, whether it was making his home as efficient as possible, driving an electric car, or speaking out about issues in our community. 
To honor Steve's passing in December 2023 we are encouraging everyone to commit to 
GOING SCHECHTER and be an
ADVOCATE FOR THE EARTH
by taking some personal actions to improve your own home, life, or community with any Going Schechter Ideas!

Home

• buy local

• get solar panels

• weatherize your home

• reduce, reuse, recycle

• compost and make your own soil

• turn your lawn into a garden

• bring your own cup for coffee refills

• turn your AC off when not at home

• wear another layer & turn your thermostat down

• limit buying products packaged in plastic

• turn lights off when you’re not needing them

• consider a cold climate air source heat pump

• read Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax” to children

• sign up for the ClimateActionNow app

• speak up about climate action

• attend a climate change march

• don't idle your car 

• use public transportation 

• carpool with friends to events

• ride a bike or an e-bike to commute around town

• buy a hybrid or an electric for your next car

• volunteer and/or donate to Habitat for Humanity

• sign up for or volunteer at a community garden

• help create a community garden

• support your local Farmers’ Market and CSAs

• contact Gunnison’s Habitat for Humanity to get Going Schechter stickers to give to your friends and family
